Ironwood Fighting Yoopers Junior Hockey Team

Yoopers Main Camp

If your interested in playing for the Ironwood Fighting Yoopers come to our August 5th. The main camp starts at 11:30 am in Minocqua Wisconsin. Check in is at 10AM.

Our NCDC affiliate  the Northern Cyclones Frank O'Conner will be at the camp to scout players from the midwest and to assist the Yooper coaching staff in selecting the 2017-18 Ironwood Fighting Yooper team.

2017-2018 Head Coach Tom Younghans

Thomas Anthony Younghans is from Saint Paul, Minnesota, and has spent most of his youth and adult life playing and coaching hockey.  Prior to turning professional in 1976, and playing 429 games for the NHL teams New York Rangers (1) and Minnesota North Stars (5), Tom was a member of the University of Minnesota hockey team from 1974-76 and played on the 1976 NCAA championship team.   Younghans also represented the United States at the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1976, 1977 and 1978, as well as the 1981 Canada Cup tournament.

Tom began his hockey career on the ice pond of the local playground.  He attended a small Catholic school in St. Paul and was recruited and played his first few years at St. Mary’s College, a Division 3 school in Winona MN.  After transferring to the University of Minnesota he was fortunate enough to have been coached under the famed coach Herb Brooks.

Tom became a fan favorite and specialized in killing penalties and playing any forward position asked of him.  Tom and his fellow players consistently were in the top 6 teams throughout his 6 years in the league in penalty killing percentages.

Most notable for Tom is the fact that he was amongst the 3% US born players to play in a widely dominated Canadian league of players of well over 95%.  In 1978 Tom and 5 other Minnesota, US born players started a game against the Chicago Black Hawk at the Met Center.  The first and only time 6 American born players ever accomplished this feat.

During the 2016 season he had been coaching in the Western States Hockey League with the Vail Powder Hounds.

Tom continues to participate with the Minnesota NHL Alumni Organization  (former NHL players) which raises money for a variety of charitable groups in and around the Minnesota & Wisconsin territory.
